Natural Lips Lipstick Routine [How To Achieve It]

One of the questions I get asked a lot is what lipstick am I wearing. Sometimes there’s an answer for it, but sometimes, I haven’t actually used any lipstick. My makeup essentials always include a lipstick, but there are times when I really want to wear the bare minimum. Recently, one of my favorite things to do to achieve a natural lips look is to use lip liner and some lip balm. In today’s post, I will share the products I use to achieve that perfect natural lips lipstick look.

1. Lip Scrub

To begin with, having smooth lips is a must. This is one I struggle with as I am constantly picking at the skin of my lips. The scrub I am using right now is a seasonal product from Trader Joe’s, but there are a lot of options in the market. One I really enjoyed using was from e.l.f. cosmetics. The main reason I liked it was because it was built like a lipstick, while most others come in a pot for you to scoop it out. Similarly, the one from Trader Joe’s comes in a squeezy tube. This helps keep things more hygienic.

Depending on your needs, exfoliating might not be something you have to do.

2. Lip Liner

Perhaps the most important step, finding the right shade lip liner. It should be close to your natural lip color, but a little deeper. It will look like your natural lip color but enhanced. On drugs. In order to achieve the perfect natural lips lipstick look, line your lips using the lip liner you were able to obtain. For me, that is the Thrive Causemetics Lip Filler Long Wearing + Plumping Lip Liner in the shade Ruth. I also like the shade Kackie, but that one is a much deeper tone than my natural lips.

In order to get that perfect look, use your finger to smudge everything in. You can also go back in with the lip liner to add a bit more pigment. What matters is that the edge of your lips remains slightly darker to the rest of your lips.

3. Lip Balm

Choosing the right lip balm is also extremely important. It shouldn’t be too glossy or shiny as it won’t look natural. My current go-to is the Glossier Balm dot Com. I have gone through so many tubes of this lip balm and it is still a favorite. Some might say it is overpriced Vaseline, but it works for me. It also doesn’t offer too much shine which is exactly the look we’re going for. Using Vaseline is also a perfect, more affordable alternative.

If you want to have a plumper look, I recommend using a clear gloss instead of a lip balm. For example, the Colourpop Cosmetics So Juicy clear gloss is amazing.

Overall, the key to that natural lips look is to find the perfect products and shades that enhance your natural lip color. This is perfect for a no makeup makeup look, or if you want to make your makeup look more put together, but don’t want to commit to a lipstick. Wearing a lip liner as a lipstick is perfect, the formula is thinner, it won’t dry out your lips, and it is easy to touch up.
