How I Grew My Instagram Account

If you have a blog, a YouTube channel, or if you’re an aspiring social media influencer, you’ll know how hard it currently is to grow an Instagram account. For every 20 new followers, you lose 25. I started using my personal Instagram account in connection with my blog in March 2017. At this time, I had less than 450 followers. Now, I have over 3,000. I know, that probably doesn’t seem like much, but it is. The real growth has happened in the last few months. In November, I had 1,500 followers. If you see anyone growing A LOT faster than this, like A LOT, you might want to question if their followers are real. Buying Instagram followers is a thing. Don’t do it. This is how I grew my Instagram account in the last two months.

Quality Content

Make sure you’re producing quality content. I am not saying you need a DSLR camera, but you at least need a phone with a camera like an iPhone 7. When using your iPhone camera, the most important thing is lighting. Having the right lighting will make all the difference. If you are using a DSLR, I recommend shooting in RAW and editing your photos in Lightroom.

Consistency

I post twice a day. This might seem excessive to some, but I think this will depend on your niche. With makeup, there are so many accounts and our niche is so oversaturated, posting twice a day allows me to reach more people. I post once in the morning and once in the evening. Whatever posting schedule you decide to go with, stick to it. Staying away from Instagram for days a time can really hurt you.

Engagement

Even if you don’t post every day, make sure you’re going on the app and engaging with others every day. Whether this is by commenting, liking, following others, interacting with your followers and those you follow. Instagram is a great way to build relationships and network with people who have your same interests. I hate whenever I get comments saying things like, “You’re my favorite account! I love your content! Check mine out!” only to see that they don’t follow me and they’ve been posting the same message on multiple posts. Leave real comments in response to the post, the photo, or the caption.

Don’t Ask For Follows

Like I said before, comments asking for follows are the worst. If you’re going to ask for a follow, make sure you’re following the account you’re asking the follow from, and that you continuously engage with them. I know it’s great being followed by an account you admire, so make sure you’re constantly showing your support to them. They notice. I promise. Asking for advice is okay, but that is not the same as a follow.

Don’t Follow to Unfollow

This is just annoying, and believe me, it doesn’t work. Just as you unfollow them, they’ll unfollow you. It’s a vicious cycle you do not want to be a part of.

Hashtags and Geolocation

Make sure you’re making the most of the hashtags you’re allowed to use. Use hashtags that are relevant to your niche and the content you’re creating. Try to avoid using the spammy ones like #like4like and #follow4follow. You can use 30 hashtags per post, but there’s a hack that allows you to use 60 hashtags. There are rumors that say that this can get you blocked, but I use 60 hashtags and so far so good. To add 60 hashtags to your post, you need to publish your photo with no hashtags, then add the first 30 as a comment, and then go back and edit the caption and add the other 30.

What I do to avoid getting blocked is going back and deleting the hashtags of old posts. This also helps to keep your account clean. The second thing you need to make the most of is geolocation. This is when you add a location to your post. Some people search photos based on location. It is just another way to be found by others.

Instagram Analytics

Unless you have 10K followers, I would not recommend you switch to a business profile. When you have a business profile, Instagram wants to push you to pay for advertisement. A way to see analytics on your account without switching to a business profile is by using the free resources available on the Internet.

  • SocialBlade – allows you to see your growth (or anyone’s growth) and future projections. This is also a great tool if you’re curious if someone has purchased followers. If they have, you’ll see how in one day they gained 20k followers when they usually gain 200.
  • Union Metrics – this one gives you a bit more data. The free version gives you an overview of your most successful hashtags, your most liked photos, and the followers who engage with your posts the most.
  • SquareLovin – the analytics provided by SquareLovin a little more in-depth. What I like the most about this one is that they give you analytics on engagement. I can see how my average of likes per post has grown, same with comments.

I hope you’ve found these tips useful! Don’t feel discouraged and just keep creating amazing content. That’s what it’s all about.
