Makeup Primers | Do They Work?

Primer was one of those beauty products I wasn’t too sure about. Is it replacing your moisturizer? Does it make a difference? Do I need it? The first primer I tried was the Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer. It is a primer that comes with EVERY beauty subscription service. This primer I did not like. I hated the silicone-type feeling I felt when applying it to my face. I then found out that this primer was suited for oily skin types, which I don’t have. But since this was my only experience with primers, I was very skeptical about them.

The next primers I decided to try were from e.l.f. This is an affordable, drugstore brand. First, I tried a pore minimizing primer and it had the same texture the Smashbox Photo Finish primer did. The second primer I tried was hydrating, or at least that’s what it was supposed to be. Again, the silicone feeling really put me off. And then, I finally tried the primers that would change my makeup application.

Too Faced Hangover Replenishing Face Primer

A replenishing face primer that hydrates, smoothes, and brightens skin for a dewy, healthy looking finish.

As the name says, this is a hydrating primer. FINALLY! I saw multiple YouTubers I know have dry skin use it in their videos, and decided I’d give this one a go. The texture is very light, it feels cool even, and it goes on beautifully. The difference between this and a moisturizer (which I also use in addition to this), is that this is a lot more lightweight. Because of that, I think it’s easier for makeup to go on on top of it and look nice. It provides you with an even, healthy canvas to apply your makeup on.

Touch In Sol No Poreblem Primer

This primer is similar to the one I did not like from Smashbox, but the silicone-texture is less. I focus this on my nose/cheek area, instead of applying it to my entire face. I find that this way it works a lot better. Also, it is not a silicone-heavy as the Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation primer. This one also has a slight pink tint to it which I find very nice for color-correcting.

A light, silky primer that blurs the look of pores and wrinkles, while enhancing the wear of makeup.

Smashbox Photo Finish Primerizer

The Smashbox Photo Finish Primerizer is part of the Photo Finish family, but this one is intended for those of us with dry skin. Much like the Too Faced primer, it immediately gives the skin a burst of hydration upon application. I find this one to be a tiny bit more hydrating than the Hangover primer, and have loved using it the past month. The bottle is glass which I think makes it hard to travel with. Even though this is a hydrating primer, I think it would also work for people with oily skin if they skipped the moisturizer step.

A face primer and moisturizer in one that delivers 24-hour hydration and powerful primer benefits in the lightest possible texture.

I would love to know your thoughts on primers. Do you think they are necessary? Have you found one that makes a difference? Let me know in the comments below!

If it were drugstore price, yes, but there are plenty drugstore mascaras just as good (or better) than this one. What’s one product you would buy if it were cheaper?
